Reiki – an introduction

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is Japanese for universal energy. It is a Japanese therapy that is based on the belief that we all have energy running through our bodies which is non-metabolised. It’s different from the energy we get from food. More like electrical energy.

The Reiki Council Uk describes Reiki as follows: “We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us and we experience a sense of well being. There are many variations of Reiki, but in essence Reiki works at bringing us into balance and is believed therefore to reinforce the body’s natural ability to heal itself at all levels, whether physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. It is a tradition that is open to any belief system.” (Reiki Council UK)

Where is this universal energy?

Reiki practitioners believe that this energy is all around us.  It is Universal energy that is present in every living thing.  One explanation that I heard and liked is to think about all of the hormones that your body releases to control its systems and processes.  These hormones are chemicals and the chemical reactions that they elicit while doing their jobs generate energy.  This is going on all around us, so it makes sense that this energy is everywhere.

In Reiki there is a belief that this energy is needed for life. You may hear it described as a universal life force

So what does Reiki do?

When we get injured, ill, stressed or run down this vital energy can become depleted. It is meant to flow freely around your body but sometimes it will get blocked or stagnate.  Reiki is about encouraging the energy to flow freely again so that your body can heal and regain balance. If your energy is depleted the Reiki practitioner will draw energy from the environment into your body to boost your own supplies.

That sounds a bit far-fetched!

Yes it does sound far-fetched but science is slowly discovering that Reiki is beneficial.  Here at Phoenix we have been offering Reiki as a treatment for years and seen many people benefit from it.

Ann’s Story

The case study below is from a client called Ann. She has given permission for us to share her story.

“I was referred to Phoenix Health and Wellbeing for massage therapy by my GP. I have a genetic skin disorder called Darier’s disease which is where huge painful blisters form on your skin which can take up to six months to heal. I’ve had Darier’s since I was 19, I’m now 64. My physical health issues really get me down. I am permanently on morphine. All my nails and my teeth have been removed because the medication erodes them and at one time, I was spending up to 8 months out of the year in hospital.

Occasionally I get so low I get suicidal. Over the last 5 years I have had 4 suicide attempts. A lot of people with long term skin conditions struggle with their mental health. My GP thought massage therapy might help me to manage my suicidal tendencies.

Since I’ve been coming here for Reiki I’ve had one minor break down and no suicidal thoughts. For me, to go 5 months without any suicidal thoughts is amazing! I come for Reiki and it completely relaxes me. I can just forget everything. I even feel relaxed when I get home from my treatment and the following day.

The therapies and the staff are really good. I’ve been to other places and it’s not the same. At Phoenix, the staff understand what you’re going through. Before we start the session they always have a chat to me about what I want from the treatment. They listen to me.”

What can I expect?

Like all massages Reiki can affect people differently.  Here’s what I feel like when I have a Reiki treatment.Reiki treatment

“Have you ever had that feeling when you are just about to fall asleep but you are still aware of your surroundings? You can still hear what’s going on but can’t be bothered to engage with it because you are so relaxed.  This is my experience of Reiki treatments. I find them so deeply relaxing.  At the end of the treatment, I have a wonderful feeling of being uplifted and upbeat.”
