Small Changes

It’s the little things: Small changes we can make to improve our health!

Your health – it’s never too late to start thinking about making improvements to your health, although this can seem like a daunting task. But you don’t have to change everything about your lifestyle in order to focus on your health – even the littlest changes can have a big impact! Here are our top tips on the little switches you can make day-to-day to take steps towards a healthier, happier you!

  1. Take a break from loads of sugar (Even if it’s just a little one)

Here at Phoenix we’ve been trying to cut down on how much sugar we eat, swapping brownies and sweets in the staffroom for fruits and veggies. We’re not only lower the amount of sugar we’re eating, but get lots of helpful vitamins into our bodies! We all still love a sweet treat every now and then, but even a couple of swaps within the week to a healthy snack will do wonders!

  1. Say goodnight to your screen

After a long day, sometimes all we want to do is sit in front of a screen – whether that’s our TV, laptop or even our phone screen. But late at night, this can actually be known to stop our brains from switching off – even after our devices are! The national sleep foundation recommends putting away and turning off all electronic devices half an hour before bed, giving your eyes and brain a gentle wind-down for a great night’s sleep!

  1. Take a few moments every day to breathe

Whether you’re working, studying, or managing other stresses, it can be easy to get caught up in a whirlwind of going from one task to the next until the end of the day. Studies at the University of Arizona have shown that controlling your breathing, and taking a minute to slow down, focus on your breath, and release tension in your body can be the best way to manage stress. Read more about their studies here Try it next time you’re feeling overwhelmed!

  1. Practice self-love

A young woman has gone viral recently for sharing her journey with self-affirmation. She takes a second every day to look in the mirror and compliment herself. After only a few days, she started to feel more confident, and go about her day with her head held high, even on a bad hair day! If something so small can make such a positive difference, we think it’s definitely worth a try!

  1. Get moving!

Now, we’re not suggesting signing up for the first marathon you hear about – fitness is a process, and like any new habit can be hard to get into. However, just incorporating a bit of movement into your daily routine can be extremely beneficial: stretching your arms and shoulders at your desk, taking the stairs instead of the lift, even just doing a couple of walking laps of the living room will get your body in motion!

It might seem like a lot to suddenly add all of these changes into your routine, but even starting with just one of them will make a difference! If you’ve made any little swaps that have made you feel healthier, let us know, we’d love to try them!
