Compete like a Lioness – Sports Massage can help

Have you been ramping up your exercise to try to burn off the kilos gained over lockdown?  Or maybe you are training for the London Marathon? Or perhaps you’ve been inspired to take up football by the recent Lioness performances? Read on to find out why sports massage may be just what you need!

Sports Massage and lactic acid

It really doesn’t matter why you are exercising or whether it is a run or a brisk walk for the bus.  The fact of the matter is that exercise can result in a build-up of lactic acid in your muscles.  This in turn can lead to muscle stiffness, aches, pains and lethargy.

Sports Massage is a full proof way of dispersing this lactic acid.  It pushes the acid out of your muscles and gets fresh blood into the tissue creating healthy, lithe and flexible muscles.

Sports massage and minor injuries

Taking part in any activity can lead to a minor mishap; a sprain of the ankle or a pull on a thigh muscle or real tightness in the shoulders after a long run. A good sports massage therapist will use various techniques to treat the site of a particular injury or problem.  They may apply heat, deep pressure or stretching movements to get the injury site mobile again and reduce any build up of fluid.

Sports massage to speed recovery

After exercise when you have exerted yourself, even if you don’t have an injury, a massage can speed recovery. This is because it helps the muscles to cleanse and restock with good nutrients and fresh supplies of blood! The muscles are able to repair the small tears that exercise causes much more quickly with this type of help.

Sports massage to enhance performance

Sports massage before exercise can enhance performance as it warms and cleans the muscles.  When you exercise, whether you are swimming, cycling, walking or whatever, your muscles will perform better if they are warm and flexible.

Can anyone do this treatment?

Sports massage is a specific therapy. The therapists who perform this treatment have to have completed a Diploma course in how to administer this type of massage.  They will be more knowledgeable about anatomy and physiology and will  have learned additional techniques and skills in order to make sure that they can treat sports injuries and perform pre and post event treatments.

Professional bodies

All Sports Massage therapists should be members of relevant professional bodies such as FHT, CthA, or the Sports Massage Association.  Don’t be afraid to ask whether the therapist you are booking with is a member of such an association.
