Lets Talk About Menopause

Acupuncture and Menopause: A Natural Path to Symptom Relief

Menopause, a natural phase in a woman’s life, marks the end of her reproductive years. However, the accompanying symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and sleep disturbances can make this transition challenging. While hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has traditionally been a go-to solution, many women are now exploring alternative holistic approaches. One therapy gaining a great reputation as a treatment is acupuncture—a traditional Chinese medicinal technique that involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the body.

Understanding Menopause

Menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 when a woman’s ovaries stop producing eggs and menstruation ceases. The body undergoes significant hormonal fluctuations during this time, leading to a variety of symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness, and sleep disturbances. The decline in oestrogen levels is a primary culprit behind these symptoms, affecting not only reproductive functions but also impacting various physiological systems.

The Challenge of Traditional Treatments

While hormone replacement therapy has been a conventional method to alleviate menopausal symptoms, it comes with its own set of risks and side effects. Research has linked HRT to an increased risk of breast cancer, heart disease, and blood clots, prompting many women to seek safer and more natural alternatives.

Acupuncture as a Holistic Approach

Acupuncture, rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, views the body as a network of interconnected pathways.  Energy or ‘Qi’, flows through these pathways and is crucial for overall health. Menopause is seen as a disruption in the balance of Qi, leading to the manifestation of symptoms. Acupuncture aims to restore this balance by stimulating specific points on the body, promoting the flow of Qi and addressing the root causes of menopausal discomfort.

How Acupuncture Works

AcupunctureAcupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body known as acupuncture points. These points are strategically chosen based on the individual’s symptoms and constitution. The needles stimulate the nervous system, triggering the release of endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers) and influencing various physiological processes.

  1. Regulating Hormones: Acupuncture is believed to regulate hormonal levels by influencing the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. This, in turn, helps to alleviate symptoms such as hot flashes and mood swings.
  2. Improving Blood Flow: Menopausal symptoms can be exacerbated by poor blood circulation. Acupuncture enhances blood flow, ensuring that vital nutrients reach the organs and tissues, promoting overall well-being.
  3. Reducing Stress: Menopause is often accompanied by increased stress levels, which can exacerbate symptoms. Acupuncture has been shown to lower stress hormones, promoting relaxation and emotional balance.
  4. Enhancing Sleep Quality: Sleep disturbances are a common complaint during menopause. Acupuncture may help improve sleep quality by addressing imbalances in the body’s energy flow and promoting a sense of calm.

Scientific Evidence

There is a growing body of research to support the efficacy of acupuncture as a treatment for menopausal symptoms.  A study published in the journal Menopause, compared the use of acupuncture with sham acupuncture (needles inserted into random points), placebo and non-hormonal drugs. The effectiveness of acupuncture was found to be higher than that of both the sham acupuncture and the placebo drugs.

The following extract is from an article in the British Medical Journal, “Acupuncture may ease troublesome menopausal symptoms”

“Among women dealing with moderate to severe symptoms, acupuncture was associated with reductions in hot flushes, excess sweating, mood swings, sleep disturbances, and skin and hair problems.

The findings prompt the researchers to conclude that acupuncture offers “a realistic” treatment option for women who can’t, or don’t want to, use hormone replacement therapy (HRT).”
