LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE MASSAGE
Lymphatic drainage massage (also known as manual lymphatic drainage) is a specialised form of massage that aims to reduce swelling from fluid retention or lymphedema.
The aim of the massage is to move stagnant fluid from a swollen area of the body into an area where it can drain more freely and where the lymphatic system is perhaps working more effectively.
To achieve this drainage the therapist has to first massage the area that the fluid is going to drain into. It may seem strange to have your abdomen massaged when it is your leg that is affected but it means that there is space for the lymphatic fluid to drain.
Lymphatic drainage massage is very gentle. The therapist will never apply deep pressure as this can prevent drainage and even damage swollen lymph vessels. The movements and techniques used are slow and rhythmic which encourages the lymph vessels to open up and allows the fluid to drain away.
Before your first treatment you will be asked a series of questions about your health to make sure that you are alright to proceed with the session.
After completing the consultation the therapist will leave you in the treatment room so that you can undress and get comfortable on the treatment couch. There will be towels for you to use to cover yourself with. During the massage the therapist will use the towels to cover your body and protect your modesty.
